Penguin Trail

May 12, 2026admin

A guided slack packing trail along the coast and in the mountains of the Kogelberg Biosphere.

The Penguin Trail is a magical hiking trail based in Betty’s Bay within the Kogelberg Biosphere, just 100 kilometres / 1.5 hours from Cape Town.

This 3 day 28 kilometre trail is suitable for anyone with a medium level of fitness.

There are 12 trails in the year, 2 in each of our autumn months (March, April, May), and 2 in each of our spring months (September, October, November).

The dates are set according to the tide timetable, to avoid beach walks on soft sand at high tide.

We can accommodate a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 people on each trail.

The trail is suitable for children aged 12 years and older.

The trail package is fully catered, and includes 3 nights’ accommodation and 2.5 days of hiking with a guide.

Accommodation is in the very comfortable Fijnbos Manor Guesthouse in Betty’s Bay.

It is slack packing, so all you need to carry is a light day pack.

Pick up and drop off in Cape Town can be arranged.

The trail is run by the Hangklip Community Care Centre (www.hccc.co.za), a local charity organization providing food parcels, subsidised cooked meals, and other services to the communities living in the Hangklip area. All the proceeds from the trail go towards providing funding for these services.

The Hangklip Coast includes the towns of Kleinmond, Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Rooiels, all located within the UNESCO Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. The thin belt between the mountains and the sea hosts many wonders: from high peaks and fynbos-covered mountain slopes, rough ravines, caves, rivers and streams tumbling over edges to pristine beaches. The area has a typical Mediterranean climate: cool, wet winters with dry and hot summers. The indigenous forest and fynbos are home to a wide variety of animals, birds and insects. Here, you escape to nature!
