KLEINMOND

"It takes a whole Village to raise a child"

Our Vision: Building a model town where all residents have their fundamental human needs met.

Our Mission: To build social cohesion between the people of Kleinmond that is a model through delivering certified job training, continuing education and small business development, a community amphitheatre and small market shops linked to the principles of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve by integrating ecological, economic and social transformation.

Building the social fabric of the community is based on building relationships "both ways". Kleinmond has historically been one of the most attractive coastal towns for retirement and tourism. However, a 2002 survey revealed the unemployment in the informal areas was an alarming 76%. A 2006 survey resulted in over 1350 people showing interest in receiving basic or further education and skills training.

To address these challenges various training and projects are being undertaken. The training centre delivers courses in Life Skills Training, Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET), Job Skills Development and Training and Further Education and Training (FET). A catering training kitchen and wooden toy project are currently being developed. In 2009, six commercial buildings will be completed. The Mthimkhulu Village has an amphitheatre which caters for a mix of cultural expressions.

Mthimkhulu Village Centre is presently offering a variety of construction courses including tiling, painting, plastering and bricklaying. A one and a half year Early Childhood Development course is ongoing at the Village. Life Long Learning courses such as English, Afrikaans and Xhosa are run by volunteers from the community. Other courses include line dancing, tai chi, computer training, Tourism and Small Business Development and mentoring.

This centrally located position in Kleinmond is being developed for the common good of the town. All residents are welcomed to volunteer or offer their ideas and support. For the Mthimkhulu Village to succeed all sectors need to develop the vision and the work plans for it from the onset.
